On Friday, our high school Living Environment and Environmental Science classes visited SUNY Morrisville as an extension of their units on Ecology. Students toured and learned about Horticulture, Equine Rehabilitation, Aquaculture, and Clean Energy Technology at SUNY Morrisville. Also, students enjoyed lunch in the dining hall and saw a few MMCSD alumni! Thank you to Dr. Jenny Frank from SUNY Morrisville for putting together the tour of these programs and facilities and to Mrs. Martin, Ms. Robinson, Mrs. Jeter, and Mrs. Boston for chaperoning the trip!

MEET OUR MUSTANGS! To welcome and introduce our new teachers to the community, Mount Markham CSD has started a new initiative called "Meet Our Mustangs." Today, we would like to welcome Jessica Klem who is joining the district as a new Mount Markham Middle School 5th Grade ELA Teacher. Q. Where and when did you receive your education? A. I received my undergraduate degree from Nazareth College in Early Childhood/Childhood Education, History, and Public Health. I also received my master's degree in Literacy from Nazareth College. Q. Prior to joining the team at the Mount Markham CSD, where did you work and in what role? A. Before I came to Mount Markham, I was a college student. Last summer, I worked full-time at the Adirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, as an Interpretation Assistant. Q. What do you look forward to in the coming school year? A. Being able to get to know my students and having a fun and engaging school year together. Q. What is your favorite part so far about working in the Mount Markham CSD? JESSICA KLEM A. My favorite part about Mount Markham CSD is how welcoming the staff has been. From the start, I have felt supported in all of my work. I attended SUNY Plattsburgh for my undergraduate degree and received my graduate degree at Buffalo State University. Q. Prior to joining the team at the Mount Markham CSD, where did you work and in what role? A. Before I came to Mount Markham CSD, I worked at OESJ Elementary School for 11 years and left to work closer to home. Q. What do you look forward to in the coming school year? A. Senior students Virginia Culver, Marissa Kulczak, and Morgan O'Bryan attended an "Honors Mindfulness Program" hosted by Herkimer BOCES. Our students learned various mindfulness and relaxation techniques to mitigate and cope with stress and anxiety. Some of the methods from the program will be taught to other students throughout the year via Sources of Strength and Youth Summit events, programming, and activities.

Last Thursday, the senior class participated in Drone Day. Thanks to CNY Drones, students watched a 10-foot drone take off, fly around, and land. Additionally, students were able to fly Rocket Drones through an obstacle course and fly Soccer Drones in the cage. Thank you to the MORIC, CNY Drones, and Rocket Drones for giving our students this opportunity!

Today, we would like to welcome Katelyn Baker-Yuhasz who is joining the district as a long-term substitute teacher for fourth grade at Mount Markham Elementary School. Q. Where and when did you receive your education? A. I graduated from Hartwick College in 2014 and from SUNY Oneonta in 2015. Q. Prior to joining the team at the Mount Markham CSD, where did you work and in what role? A. I worked part-time at a private preschool in Richfield Springs, did some substitute teaching at Richfield Springs CSD and Mount Markham CSD, and took some time off in between to be a stay-at-home mom. Q. What do you look forward to in the coming school year? A. I look forward to being back in the classroom, getting to know my students, and learning a whole lot about my students and curriculum along the way! I worked as a 2nd-grade teacher in Vermont for one year and as a 2nd-grade teacher in Connecticut for three years. Q. What do you look forward to in the coming school year? A. I look forward to working with an awesome group of teachers and watching all of my students learn and grow! On Saturday, the senior class held the first semi-formal Homecoming Ball for the high school. Students enjoyed delicious baked goods (some of which were courtesy of Sweeting's Sweets) and a giant charcuterie board (courtesy of Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Young)! Mrs. Brower and Ms. Robinson would like to thank all of the chaperones (Ms. Campion, Mrs. Pagano, Mr. Circelli, Mrs. Palmer, Ms. Palmer, and Mr. Winegard), Mr. Hoke, Mr. Wrobel, Mr. Zampetti, DJ Larkin, the art classes for making a giant 3D Mustang, and everyone who helped to make this a fun, positive experience for our students!

Last week, Mount Markham High School's Freshman Class took a field trip to the Nexus Center for a workshop, "Overcoming Obstacles." The workshop featured renowned teacher and author Erin Gruwell and her former students, the Freedom Writers, and was attended by several area school districts. The workshop focused on self-expression and building positive social interactions.
