Students in Ms. Robinson's Astronomy class have been working on coding drones to simulate missions from the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars. Students created two different missions, one easy and one more difficult, that students in Mrs. Stone's fourth-grade class had to code with the help of some of our friends in the Astronomy class! Students had a great time coding the missions, learning a little bit about Mars, and were super excited to see the drones take off and do some cool tricks (including some flips, which Ingenuity didn't do)! Thank you to Mrs. Bock for her help with this project and Mrs. Blackwell for helping us bring this to some of our elementary students!
Yesterday, Mount Markham Elementary held a House Assembly, and staff dressed in purple to honor military families, as April is the Month of the Military Child. The elementary chorus celebrated our veterans and currently serving military members with a special, patriotic song. At the end of the assembly, student teacher Anna and her service dog Penny were given a heartfelt farewell, as it was their last day with the district.
Congratulations to Sheila Jones for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for supporting our students on their trip to London and France.
Congratulations to our IT Department for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for everything you do to keep our district's technology in shape and for helping out with problems as they arise.
On Saturday, Mount Markham CSD held its Annual Easter Egg Hunt! A great time was had by all. Thank you to the National Honor Society for sponsoring this event.
Students in Mrs. Brower's tenth-grade English class created their own children's books on life lessons learned from a book we read in class. Students read their life lesson book to Mrs. Casale's kindergarten class. We are thankful they let us come in and were such good listeners!
The Mount Markham Music Department is collecting canned food items in partnership with Feed Our Vets for Music In Our Schools Month. See the article below for important information if you would like to support the department's cause.

Mrs. Weiss' second-grade class celebrated the culmination of their Ancient Greek Civilizations unit with a robotic chariot race! Students designed and built mini chariots using cardboard, k-cups, pipe cleaners, paper clips, fasteners, and other objects. Their chariots were also required to safely hold a Charioteer and easily be attached to a Beebot. The students then programmed the BeeBot to navigate their chariot through a course.
In celebration of Youth Art Month, students' artwork is on display at Bassett Healthcare in Herkimer! Mount Markham CSD students from both the high school and elementary school will have their work on display throughout the month.

Mrs. Entwistle & Mr. Bard's third-grade classes combined their knowledge of animal adaptations with coding to simulate an owl's keen eyesight.
The project involved utilizing the light sensor feature of Microbits – pocket-sized programmable computers – to simulate the behavior of an owl's eye. As darkness descended upon the classroom, the LED lights embedded within the Microbits would dynamically expand, mimicking the owl's ability to dilate its pupils in low-light conditions to hunt for their food.
Mrs. Blackwell assisted the students with their programs to help them adjust parameters to ensure a seamless transition between light and dark environments, much like the adaptation observed in owls.
Congratulations to Sarah Brooks for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for going above and beyond to support our students and our elementary school.
