Speech & Debate State Championship 2026

Over the weekend of April 18th, the Mount Markham Speech and Debate team traveled to Bronx High School Science with the six team members who had qualified for the New York State Forensic League Championship Tournament. Juniors Kihana Eccleston and Laci Blades, and Sophomores Dakota Bailey, Jayden Seeley, Gianna Scherer, and Jordyn Gould competed in five different events throughout the day on Saturday.

Kihana Eccleston finished 13th overall in Humorous Interpretation. Jordyn Gould and Gianna Scherer finished 19th overall in Duo Interpretation. Jayden Seeley competed in Declamation, and Laci Blades competed in Varsity Oral Interpretation of Literature, both finishing with overall scores just out of the top rankings.

Dakota Bailey finished the day in 10th place in Junior Varsity Oral Interpretation of Literature, which qualified her for the semi-final round on Sunday. While she didn't qualify for the final round. She ended the day with a prize for 9th place overall.

Up next, the team travels to Washington DC for the national tournament over Memorial Day weekend.
