Mustang of the Month-May 2025

The PBIS Leadership Team is proud to announce our Mustang of the Month award recipients for May. Congratulations to Nicole Baker, Katie McConnell and Brandon Ball.

Nicole Baker is the first Mustang of the Month for May. Originally from the Town of Columbia, she graduated from Mohawk Central School. Nicole earned an associate’s degree from Herkimer County Community College before becoming an elementary teacher at Mount Markham. What she enjoys most about working in the elementary school is tying in fun events for the students, while still providing them with a great education. She always tries her best to be kind and fair and encourages others to “focus on the positive things in life, even when there are a lot of negatives.”

When she’s not at work, Nicole likes spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys playing with her niece, doing arts and crafts, reading, and spending time outside, especially in the summer.

Our next recipient is Katie McConnell, a teaching assistant in the middle school. Katie is a graduate of Waterville Central School and Hudson Valley Community College. Before becoming a TA in the middle school, she worked at Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency. She was also a childcare director in the community for 23 years, as well as an aide in the elementary school. One of her favorite things about Mount Markham is the welcoming atmosphere she gets to be a part of. “Every morning there is always someone with a smile or a friendly word, whether it's a student or a fellow staff member," which is why she advocates for patience and kindness, “pass on a smile and try to be patient. We never know what someone else may be feeling or dealing with.” Katie has been a part of the West Winfield community for 31 years, residing with her husband and three daughters. She loves camping and attending concerts and is honored to have been chosen Mustang of the Month for the middle school.

High school physical education teacher, Brandon Ball, is our last Mustang of the Month for May. Originally from Canastota, NY, Brandon graduated high school in 2020 and then attended SUNY Cortland for physical education. Brandon completed his student-teaching at Oneida Central School District before joining Mount Markham as a long-term substitute. Brandon is thankful for the supportive, close-knit atmosphere that has helped him grow alongside both students and colleagues. As an educator, he values “building strong, respectful relationships with students, and being someone they can trust and rely on.” He believes in showing consistency, empathy, and a genuine interest in the well-being of his students. He also encourages others to stay open to feedback and always lead with kindness and integrity. Outside of work, Brandon enjoys working out, going for hikes, fishing, going to the lake, and playing with his tailless cat.
