Maple Syrup equipment

Mount Markham High School students in the Natural Resources class have been busy making maple syrup as part of the Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Syrup and Photography Contest.

The Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Syrup and Photography Contest is a program sponsored by New York Agriculture in the Classroom.

Students and educators are challenged to transform maple sap into syrup and document the experience through photography. Schools will submit a sample of classroom-made maple syrup, the curricular connections, and photographs for a chance to place in the top of their grade-level division.

The contest builds an appreciation and knowledge of the history, art, science, and careers involved in the production, marketing, and distribution of pure New York maple syrup.

On March 4, students in the Natural Resources class finished, filtered and hot-packed the .5-pint sample to be entered into the contest. A total of two gallons has been produced to date with the anticipation that more will follow.
