  • Flanagan Celebrates Retirement with First Kindergarten Students

    Jane Flanagan was joined by two of her first Mount Markham kindergarten students at the Board of Education Retirement Recognition Meeting!
     
    Therese Deak and Sandy Williams, class of 1999, both thanked Jane for giving them a great start in kindergarten back in 1986. Therese is currently working as a Senior Manager in Human Resources at Chobani, and Sandy is currently a photographer at Northern Safety and Industrial.

  • Seniors Travel to Camp Huntington
     
     
    Forty Mount Markham seniors traveled to SUNY Cortland's historic Camp Huntington, the first Great Camp of the Adirondacks, on Raquette Lake from Sunday, June 12 to Tuesday, June 14!
     
     
    Students did team building and communication exercises, the low ropes course, high ropes course, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming and hiking. It was a great opportunity for our seniors to do one more activity together before graduation!
     
     
    Mr. Mosny would like to thank chaperones Steve Gates, Sue Culver, Amanda Kane, Angie Martin, Sara Robinson, Tori Roberts and Phil Keida for all of their help with the activities and supervision of students. We would also like to thank the superintendent, Mr. Joe D'Apice, for joining the group for the day on the high ropes course. It was another successful trip with our seniors to the Adirondacks!

  • Mount Markham High School Celebrates Fun Day

    Mount Markham High School had a Fun Day today! The Fun Day was complete with outdoor games, snowcones, cotton candy, grilled food, a bouncy house, face painting and movies! Our students had a great time celebrating the end of the school year.

  • Fifth Grade Attends Farm and Home Safety Day

    On Tuesday, Mount Markham Middle School fifth graders participated in Farm and Home Safety Day at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds, along with other fifth grade students from around Herkimer County. The students rotated through 17 different hands-on learning stations, where they received instruction and asked questions. They learned how to be safe around a variety of common things found in and around the home and on farms. An additional highlight of the day was seeing our Mount Markham High School FFA members presenting their knowledge to our fifth graders!

    On Monday night, the Mount Markham National Junior Honor Society held their annual induction ceremony. Congratulations to all of our new National Junior Honor Society members!

  • Optimist Club Holds Recognition Program

    Last Thursday, the Mount Markham Optimist Club held a recognition program for our ten 8th grade Optimist Youth of the Month recipients. These students were selected based on scholarship, character and school/community activities.

  • Mount Markham Holds 4th Annual Dodgeball Tournament

    Mount Markham CSD held its 4th Annual Dodgeball Tournament to raise money for the American Heart Association and increase awareness of cardiovascular disease.
     
     
    Elementary students played castle ball with their parents and raised $1228. The middle school and high school students played dodgeball in a round robin style tournament and raised $1657. In total, we raised $2885 for the American Heart Association!
     
     
    Winners for 5/6 were the "MMMs," winners for 7/8 were the "School Lunchers" and winners for the high school were "The Dawgs." Thank you to Mrs. Lindsey, Mrs. Jeter, Mrs. Sanzo, Mrs. Bard and Mr. Hawes for all of your assistance, and thank you to all the teachers and adults who donated items for the concession stand. Thanks to everyone for helping to save a life!

  • Art Students Attend Van Gogh Immersion Experience

     
    Yesterday, our 8th grade studio art class was able to visit the Van Gogh Immersion Experience in Schenectady!
     
     
    Our students (and chaperones) had a great time learning about the works of Vincent van Gogh. This experience was made possible by the support of Herkimer BOCES through the Arts-in-Education Service.

  • Mount Markham Athletes Excel at State Open Qualifiers, Mackenzie Roth moves onto States

    Our Track and Field athletes excelled in their respective events at the NYSPHSAA State Qualifying meet last night!
     
    Congratulations to Dominic Jones for placing 5th in the shot put and to Amber Piersma for placing 6th in the pole vault at State Open Qualifiers.
     
    In an exceptional performance, Mackenzie Roth won the Section 3 State Open Qualifier discus and qualified for the New York State Track and Field Championships next Friday, where she will be representing Mount Markham and Section 3. Excellent job!

  • Mount Markham Students Build Environmentally Friendly Robots

     
    Mrs. Curran's sixth grade science classes created robots out of recycled materials. The robots had to include a renewable energy source, and students had to create a plan for their robots to minimize human impact on Earth. This project-based learning assignment allowed students to work as a team while accomplishing an educational task. Great work!

  • Mount Markham Students Attend Conservation Day Field Trip

    Last Wednesday, Mount Markham sixth grade students went on a field trip to KOA campgrounds for Conservation Day sponsored by 4-H. Our students rotated through 12 different presentations involving conservation. The trip was a fun and educational time for all!

  • Mount Markham High School Makes Tape Art Murals

    At Mount Markham High School, students have been working on tape art murals! Prior to starting the murals, students proposed a sketched plan and then worked either as individuals or in groups to create the murals. The result has been some amazing works of art!

    Congratulations to Mackenzie Roth for winning the Sectional Class C1 discus and placing 2nd in the shot put. Mackenzie will be competing in State Open Qualifiers next week. Excellent work, Mackenzie!

  • MMCSD Athlete Breaks School Discus Record

    Congratulations to Mackenzie Roth for breaking the school record in the discus at Cooperstown on 5/10 with a throw of 114'5. Mackenzie also won both the shot and discus at the CSC Division 3 Championship and was named co-Field Athlete of the Meet. Mackenzie has qualified for sectionals in both the shot and discus and has qualified for State Open Qualifiers in the discus. Great job, Mackenzie!

    The Mount Markham Elementary Art Show showcased art by our elementary students from pre-K to fifth grade, and our budding artists created some wonderful work. A big thanks to Mrs. McClave for putting this all together and showing us just how amazing our students are!

  • MMCSD Senior Improves School Pole Vault Record

    Congratulations to Mount Markham senior, Amber Piersma, for improving her own school record in the pole vault to 9'0 at Cooperstown this past Tuesday. Amber is also the school record holder in the 3000m and has qualified for four events going into sectionals. Great job, Amber!

  • Arbor Day Festivities at Mount Markham

    On Friday, the High School Science Club celebrated both Earth Day and Arbor Day by planting 5 Gala apple trees and 2 Balsam Fir trees in the Land Lab at Mount Markham High School. They were assisted by some FFA students as well as Mrs. Martin's, Mrs. Kenyon's and Ms. Robinson's science classes and Mr. Bugbee.

  • Mount Markham students "sample" tentative fall play

    Mount Markham High School is tentatively planning on performing "The Play That Goes Wrong" in the late fall/early winter with our high school drama kids!

    On Wednesday, students attended a pre-performance lecture with Ms. Chris Woodworth, Professor of Theatre at Hobart & William Smith Colleges and a post-performance Q&A with the Syracuse Stage Director of Production Operations, Mr. Don Buschmann. Mount Markham even had a student participate on stage prior to the performance!

  • Mount Markham students visit MVCC's donor lab

    On April 7th, students from Mrs. Moore's Anatomy and Physiology class and some of Mrs. Martin's Forensic Science students got the opportunity to visit MVCC's donor lab.

    Students were able to get hands-on experience, and instructors from the radiology program also joined us with film and examples of human bones. Field trips like this help bring real-world experiences to the classroom.

  • HS Telescope Allows for Astronomy During the Day

    The high school astronomy class was able to use their new telescope this Tuesday!
     
    They recently completed their unit on the Sun, so on Tuesday they used their two solar filters to safely view the Sun. With the filters, they were also able to view sunspots on the solar surface.

    As the class continues to use the telescope, they will be putting together a website with pictures taken using a telescope camera, and observations will be recorded in various student projects. Students will work on lunar projects (focused on observations of the Moon), solar projects and stellar projects as they hold observation days and nights!

  • Wellness Fair

    The Wellness Fair last Friday was a blast!
     
    We had popcorn, maple cotton candy provided by FFA and a healthy hash with vegetables from our Ag. Department Greenhouse provided by Mrs. Roberts and her Food & Nutrition students.

    We also had art and expressive activities provided and run by Mrs. Pagano and her students, essential oil bracelets and more at a craft table with Youth Summit and multiple organizations from the surrounding area.

    The big "hit" of the day was Wilson's Cops and Kids Boxing Program. Many of our students loved putting on the boxing gloves and trying out the sport!

    Congratulations to our Area All-State Mixed Choir participants Catherine Huntley, Gabrielle Dixon and Jeremiah Boyko!

  • A Soldier's Heart - Mt Markham Teacher Publishes Late Father's Poems

    Amanda Boston, a special education teacher at Mount Markham High School, was recently recognized in the Rome Sentinel for publishing a book of her father's poems that he wrote during the Vietnam War. The poems detail his fears, his memories and ultimately serve as a reminder of him.

  • Astronomy Dioramas

    Inspired by The Martian and NASA's upcoming Artemis missions, the Mount Markham High School Astronomy class was tasked with thinking outside the box and creating dioramas with their own interpretations of either a Martian or Lunar colony. As a cross-curricular add-on, students learned about circuits and - using paper circuits - incorporated light features into their dioramas.

  • Mount Markham High School Launches The Kindness Cart

    Mount Markham High School is pleased to introduce the Kindness Cart! Spearheaded by Guidance Secretary Tracy Palmer and Nurse Alicia Walker, the Kindness Cart rewards students for acts of kindness. Teachers give students a coupon when they witness them being kind, and students can exchange those coupons for a hot beverage or a snack. The Kindness Cart is part of a wider PBIS initiative to encourage positive behavior.

  • Hannaford Makes Generous Donation to The Care Closet

    The Care Closet window

    We are excited to share that Hannaford has provided The Care Closet with toiletries, hygiene products and a generous monetary donation for our students.  The purpose of The Care Closet is two-fold: provide our students with free toiletry/clothing items and offer students a sense of support and education as to the importance of personal care, hygiene and cleanliness. All middle school students are welcome to visit The Care Closet!

    We truly appreciate Hannaford's support! Many of the toiletry and hygiene items have already gone home with our students, and the monetary donation is being used to ensure we have clothing in all sizes.

    The Care Closet has clothes for students in need.

    As a reminder to students and families, The Care Closet is currently open during the following times: Monday - 5th Period, Wednesday - 5th Period and Friday - 10th Period. Students can also make an appointment to visit with a teacher or staff member at a different time.
