  • Entry Plan and Survey Results

Posted by Dr. Paul Berry on 3/14/2016

Prior to my arrival on campus in November, meetings with the community and with the school board, prompted me to develop an entry plan and community survey. Over the last several months, I updated the board regarding the entry plan progress and on March 8, I shared data from the community survey as well as my final entry plan report. That document is linked here

    Meet Our Superintendent of Schools

super It was my pleasure to join the Mount Markham school community in November, 2015,  Mount Markham is a wonderful community, with an outstanding faculty and staff and I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many community members who are dedicated to our student’s success.

I look forward to meeting you, but until then, here is a little about me.

I attended Lake George High School in Lake George, NY. I graduated in 1982 and attended SUNY Plattsburgh, where I received a B.S. in Political Science, an M.S. in Education and a CAS degree in school counseling. In 2014, I completed my Ph.D. in education administration and policy studies at the University at Albany.

While I attended SUNY Plattsburgh, I became a resident assistant and later a residence hall director. During my undergraduate years, I was elected to the Student Association and served as a student senator and executive vice president. I enjoyed playing club hockey (I actually tried twice to make the college team), rugby and track and field.  As a graduate student, I worked fulltime in the Campus Life Office in the Student Affairs Division. I supported the assistant director of Campus Life and during the summers, I coordinated the student orientation program.  I began my career in PK-12 education in 1992 when I became a high school counselor at Northeastern Clinton CSD in Champlain, NY.

Being a school counselor was very rewarding. I spent my days working in classrooms, with large and small groups, and helping individual students with personal, social, academic and career development issues. Being in the classroom was important to me, I wanted to teach, plan units and deliver important content. I enjoyed the opportunities to collaborate with teachers, administrators and parents as part of a comprehensive school counseling program. I also enjoyed coaching ice hockey and softball. Also during this time, I served as an adjunct professor in the school counseling department at SUNY Plattsburgh and was elected VP of the New York State School Counseling Association.

I began my administrative career as a junior-senior high school assistant principal at Peru Central School in Peru, NY. In three years at Peru, I served in three different administrative positions before finding a more permanent position as a middle school principal in Galway, NY. As Galway Middle School principal, I was pleased to work with a faculty and staff that helped our school be recognized as a “High Achieving/Gap Closing School” by the state education department.

To help me prepare for the transition to the role of superintendent, I participated in the New York State Council of School Superintendent’s New Superintendent Academy and held a district level curriculum, assessment and student affairs role during my final year in Galway. I served as superintendent of schools at Hadley-Luzerne CSD in Lake Luzerne, NY for three and a half years. During my first two years, I supported the district’s business office, transportation, cafeteria and buildings and grounds as the district maintained only a part-time business official. The experience at Hadley-Luzerne has been a tremendous benefit to me and I look forward to using that experience to support Mount Markham.

Currently, my primary residence is in the Town of Litchfield, near Cedar Lake. Living in the community allows me to be visible and actively involved in the community. You’ll see me walking the sidelines at athletic contests or enjoying our student performances at plays and concerts.  I have been married for nearly 30 years and have three adult children. My wife and I also have a home in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me regarding any matter related to our school district. You can contact me at 315-822-2824 or via email pberry@mmcsd.org. You can also follow us on Twitter @MountMarkhamCSD
