On the opening night of the 2007 season, the Mustangs traveled to Canastota for a non-league match-up. It was Mustang domination from the onset, with Kyle Maxson picking off a pass on the first play of the game, and returning it 20 yards. This set up the 1st TD for the mustangs, an 8yd run by Justin Deming. Eight plays later, still in the 1st quarter, Deming hit Maxson in the corner of the endzone for a 19yd touchdown pass. On the 4th play of the 2nd quarter, Luke Phillips ran 44yds for the Mustangs 3rd score of the 1st half. On the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, Joe Welch broke free for a 52yd kickoff return, setting up Phillips 2nd TD of the evening from 1yd out. Matt Casale finished off the scoring with a 3yd run in the 4th quarter. Luke Phillips ended the night with a very impressive 199yds. on 17 carries. The Mustangs offense totaled 431yds. for the evening. Matt Kenyon led the team in tackles with 8, while Ken Welch and Kyle Crawford each had a fumble recovery.

On the 2nd week of the season, 1st division game, the Mustangs and the powerful running of Luke Phillips, proved to much to handle for the Indians. Phillips rushed for 4 touchdowns, runs of 19, 52, 63, and 80 yard romps for 289yds. of total rushing. It marked for the 1st time in 18 years that Mt. Markham was able to defeat Sauquoit on the road. Phillips also caught 2 passes for 17yds. Matt Casale added the other TD with a 10yd. burst up the middle. The Mustangs totaled 429yds. of total offense. Defensively, they were led by Ken Welch with 8 tackles. James Betts and Zach Winters each had an interception.

The Mustangs are proving they're for real! In week 3, they had a decisive win over rivals Herkimer, improving their record to 3-0, and there state ranking to 6th in class C. With 8:21 left in the 1st quarter, Luke Phillips broke loose on a 74yd. run for the Mustangs first score. The PAT try by Kyle Maxson went wide left, giving Mt. Markham a 6-0 lead. However, just 3 minutes later Herkimer answered with a 14yd. pass, making the PAT, Herkimer went up 7-6. Still in the 1st, with only 2 seconds on the clock, Justin Deming hit Matt Kenyon in the endzone for a 29yd TD pass, the PAT was good, giving the Mustangs a 13-7 lead. With 5:38 left in the 2nd quarter, Herkimer scored again, this time on a 1yd. run. The big play however, was on the PAT attempt, Ken Welch burst through the line and blocked the attempt, making it 13-13 at the half. In the 2nd half, the Mustangs came out on fire, scoring 3 times and never looking back! Luke Phillips scored 2 more times, runs of 14 and 80 yards, and Deming found Tim Hodge open for a 13yd. touchdown pass. Phillips ended the evening with 276 yards on 25 carries. Deming was 5 for 10 passing with 99yds. and 2 touchdowns. Maxson was 4 for 5 on PAT's, with 2 interceptions, and Joe Welch added an interception. Deming led the team in tackles with 11.

STILL UNDEFEATED @ 4-0!!!!!!!!
The 'stangs 1st home game of the season was not for the faint of heart. Adirondack showed what not giving up is all about. Going into the locker rooms at half-time, Mt. Markham was up 20-7, and had all the momentum. Half ways through the 3rd quarter, the Mustangs had a 34-7 lead, and what seemed like another sure win, but Adirondack never quit! Luckily for Mt. Markham, the clock ran out on the Wildcats, and the Mustangs held onto a wild 41-35 league win, to remain unbeaten, and all alone at the top of the Class C-East division. Luke Phillips had another unbelievable night rushing, setting the school record for most yards in a single game, previously held by Will Scherer. Luke finished the night with 354 yards on 19 carries, with 6 rushing TD's. Justin Deming went 4 for 7 passing with 77yds. The longest, an in-stride strike to Kyle Maxson for 46yds. Defensively, Ed Mariotti had an interception, Joe Orsino had a blocked PAT, and Justin Deming led the team in tackles with 17. Congratulations on another great win! |
